The sequel to I Know What You Did Last Summer is shaping up to be a nostalgic bloodbath—with a fresh twist.
Director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is pulling no punches in her upcoming slasher, set to hit theaters this July. In a conversation with PEOPLE, Robinson promised fans a true homage to the beloved 1997 classic, but with more brutality, more suspense, and definitely more gore.
“All the things that you want to see in this movie, you’re going to see in this movie,” she declared confidently, emphasizing that the film was made by superfans for superfans. Returning icons Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. will reprise their original roles, now joined by a new generation of potential victims, including Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Jonah Hauer-King, and Tyriq Withers.
Robinson teased that this sequel leans in hard on the horror:
“There’s definitely more methodology to every kill in this movie… There’s not a lot of gore or blood or violence in the first one. There certainly is in this one.”
Beyond just upping the body count, the sequel pays tribute to the franchise’s second film, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, with a “fantastic nod” that she hopes will thrill longtime fans. But don’t expect a carbon copy—Robinson says this is also “balls-to-the-wall fun” and embraces new absurdities while keeping things terrifying.
Between its legacy cast, fresh blood, and updated scares, this might be the summer slasher flick fans have been dying for.
