The Google Contacts app is a popular choice for managing contact lists on Android devices, offering an array of features to store detailed information about contacts. Users can input various details, including phonetic pronunciations, nicknames, job titles, birthdays, and company information. However, one significant feature is notably absent: the ability to sort contacts by the date they were added.
Finding newly added contacts often feels like a guessing game. Many users have experienced the frustration of meeting someone new, enjoying a conversation, and exchanging contact information, only to forget their names shortly afterwards. This leads to a tedious scroll through the entire contact list in search of that one entry. This challenge intensifies when multiple new acquaintances are made in a short period, forcing users to rely on memory and context clues to identify the correct individual.
Although the Google Contacts app provides a “Recent” section under the Highlights tab, this feature only displays a limited number of recently created or viewed contacts. As soon as more contacts are added or viewed, the list quickly becomes overwritten. What users require is a specific filter in the main tab that enables them to sort contacts according to the date they were added.
Current workarounds, such as sending a text message or making a missed call when saving a new number, do not adequately resolve the issue, particularly in professional environments. While Google Contacts does allow users to create labels for better organization, such as a “New” label for recently added contacts, this method is inefficient for finding new entries quickly.
The demand for this feature is not just a personal preference; it is a necessity for professionals in sales, marketing, and networking-intensive roles. Other apps, like LinkedIn and third-party platforms such as Contacts+, have implemented the ability to sort by recently added contacts for years. Even Telegram notifies users when a new contact joins the platform.
Considering the recent enhancements in the Google Contacts app, such as the revamped UI for the contact creation page and the Besties feature for favorite contacts, Google needs to focus on integrating the option to sort contacts by the date they were added. Implementing this feature would significantly enhance the user experience by making newly added entries readily accessible without the hassle of scrolling through an extensive address book.
Despite this limitation, Google Contacts remains a valuable app for syncing contacts across devices and merging duplicates. Yet, as user needs evolve, so should the app.
