Did The Office make fun of Andy Samberg’s lonely island skit with their parody?

In a recent episode of The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers podcast, Andy Samberg shared his reflections on The Office‘s spoof of their famous Saturday Night Live skit, “Lazy Sunday.” The skit, which premiered in 2005 and features Samberg and Chris Parnell rapping about their day off, has become iconic. However, when The Office produced a parody titled “Lazy Scranton,” featuring Steve Carell and Rainn Wilson, Samberg found himself confused about whether it was a playful tribute or a mockery.

Samberg recounted that he initially struggled with his feelings about the spoof, wondering if The Office creators were making fun of them or simply showcasing how people reacted to their original sketch. He clarified this by reaching out to Mike Schur, a writer and showrunner for The Office, who was also a friend. This conversation helped Samberg realize that Schur appreciated what they were doing, putting his concerns to rest.

Seth Meyers, another co-host on the podcast, agreed with Samberg’s sentiment, suggesting that the parody was a natural fit for Michael Scott’s character and not meant to ridicule The Lonely Island.

In addition to his reflections on the skit, Samberg is currently starring in Lee, a war film where he plays a photojournalist alongside Kate Winslet. The movie tells the story of a model who becomes a photographer during World War II and is currently in theaters. Meanwhile, The Office (U.S.) continues to be available for streaming on Peacock, with all nine seasons accessible to fans.
