Naomi Campbell is facing significant legal issues after being banned from leading any charitable organization in England and Wales for five years. This decision comes in the wake of an investigation by Britain’s Charity Commission, which found that Campbell’s charity, Fashion for Relief, was “poorly governed” and had “inadequate financial management.” The organization, established in January 2015 to support various environmental and humanitarian causes, has been accused of misusing funds, including spending money on luxury expenses such as extravagant flights, upscale hotel stays, and even cigarettes.
According to the report, the trustees of Fashion for Relief allegedly spent €14,800 on a flight from London to Nice in May 2018, claiming it was necessary for transporting art and jewelry valued at over €1.5 million for a charity fundraising event in Cannes.
Naomi Campbell’s response
In response to these allegations, Campbell expressed her concern while maintaining her innocence during an interview with the Associated Press. She stated that she had delegated control of the charity to a legal employer and emphasized that she is currently investigating the matter to clarify the situation. Campbell also denied any wrongdoing regarding claims that she failed to comply with the charity’s constitution, noting that formal meeting minutes were not recorded and that unauthorized expenses were authorized.
“I was not in control of my charity; I put the control in the hands of a legal employer,” Campbell explained. “We are investigating to find out what and how, and everything I do and every penny I ever raise goes to charity.”
Throughout her career, Campbell has navigated various controversies, including public outbursts and legal troubles. Nevertheless, she has remained a dominant figure in the fashion industry and continues to be regarded as a fashion icon. Recently, she was honored with the Order of Arts and Letters in France for her contributions to French culture.
