The Apple TV may not be Apple’s flagship product like the iPhone or Mac, but it still gets some attention with fun software updates. Recently, Apple introduced new features in tvOS 18, including better dialogue and automatic subtitles, enhancements to the Home App, and a cool feature called InSight that gives you real-time info about actors and music in Apple TV Plus shows.
What’s New in tvOS 18?
One of the standout additions is a stylish portrait screensaver that displays your favorite portrait-oriented photos from your library along with a clock overlay. Setting this up takes a bit of effort, but it’s worth it!
Does Your Apple TV Support the Portrait Screensaver?
To use the portrait screensaver, you need an Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later). Older models like the Apple TV HD or the 1st generation Apple TV 4K won’t have this feature.
How to Install tvOS 18
Installing tvOS 18 is a straightforward process and should take around 10 to 15 minutes. You can still use your Apple TV during part of the installation, and it will reboot automatically when done.
- Go to Settings: On your Apple TV, open the Settings app.
- Check for Updates: Select Software Updates and check for updates. If tvOS 18 is available, go ahead and install it.
How to Set Up the Portrait Screensaver in tvOS 18
Once you’ve installed tvOS 18, follow these steps to set up the new screensaver:
- Open Settings: Go back to the Settings app, select General, and then choose Screen Saver.
- Current Selection: Check your current screensaver selection. Since the portrait option is new, it probably won’t be selected yet.
- Choose Portraits: From the options, select Portraits. Your Apple TV will start syncing your photo library, which may take some time depending on how many photos you have.
- Customize Your Settings: Once syncing is complete, you can customize what types of photos to display—like People, Pets, Nature, and City. You can also adjust how often the photos change with the Update Frequency setting.
Now you’re all set! After a bit of idle time, your Apple TV will showcase your beautiful portraits along with a clock, adding a personal touch to your living space. Whether you’re hosting friends or just relaxing, this new screensaver brings warmth and charm to your home, turning your TV into a window to your cherished memories.
