TikTok announced on Monday that its revamped “Subscription” monetization feature is now being launched for eligible creators in select regions, including Brazil, France, Germany, Spain, the U.K., Indonesia, Italy, Japan, South Korea, and the U.S. The company intends to broaden this feature to additional markets in the upcoming weeks. This significant development follows TikTok’s earlier announcement in March about renaming its LIVE Subscription monetization tool to simply “Subscription” and its intention to broaden its accessibility to non-LIVE creators.
TikTok’s Subscription offering aims to provide creators with a monetization platform similar to Patreon, enabling them to share exclusive content with paying subscribers. This feature also directly competes with Instagram Subscriptions and YouTube’s channel memberships, both of which offer creators opportunities to increase their earnings by providing users access to additional content and perks.
With this expansion, regular creators can now offer paying subscribers’ exclusive content and various perks. Creators can set up three different tiers at different price points, each offering various exclusive benefits for a monthly fee. Subscribers will gain access to exclusive content, which includes videos, LIVEs, and notes visible only to paying users. Additionally, subscribers can utilize perks such as extra communication channels through Sub Space, a unique area where creators can interact with their subscribers.
Subscribers will also receive unique stickers for use during LIVEs and badges that appear next to their names on profiles and in comments, enhancing their interaction with the community. Moreover, creators can design custom perks tailored specifically for their audience. A TikTok spokesperson mentioned that these customized perks consist of additional benefits that creators can choose from a curated list provided by TikTok, which includes performance requests, Discord roles, shoutouts, behind-the-scenes videos, and the ability to play games together.
To qualify for the Subscription feature, creators need to be at least 18 years old and must have a minimum of 10,000 followers along with 100,000 video views in the preceding calendar month. Additionally, creators’ accounts must be in good standing to participate in this new monetization initiative.
