Strands is a fresh, daily brain teaser from the New York Times, and it’s like a more challenging version of a word search. You’ll need sharp eyes and some strategy to crack this puzzle.
How to Play NYT Strands
In Strands, your job is to find the “theme words” hidden in a grid of letters. You create words by dragging your finger or tapping letters in sequence. Once you form a word, double-tap the last letter to confirm it. If the word is one of the theme words, it’ll be highlighted in blue and those letters can’t be used again.
But even if you stumble upon a word that isn’t part of the theme, it’s still useful! For every three non-theme words you find that are at least four letters long, you’ll earn a hint. The hint reveals letters from one of the theme words, and you’ll just need to unscramble it.
There’s a twist: every single letter in the grid is part of a theme word, and no letter is used more than once. Plus, each puzzle includes one extra-special word called a “spangram.” The spangram is a word (or words) that describes the puzzle’s theme and stretches across two opposite sides of the grid. When you find it, it’ll be highlighted in yellow.
The challenge is to solve the puzzle quickly and with as few hints as possible.
