Garmin has unveiled the inReach Messenger Plus, an advanced version of its satellite communicator, which now includes the ability to send photos and voice messages. This new feature set expands upon the text messaging capabilities of the original inReach Messenger, enhancing its functionality for users in remote areas.
The original Garmin inReach Messenger, launched in 2022, remains available at $299.99, focusing solely on text messaging. However, the inReach Messenger Plus, priced at $499.99, introduces multimedia features that allow users to transmit photos and audio clips through the Iridium satellite network. This upgraded model does not include service, with subscription plans ranging from $11.95 to $49.95 per month for consumers. Professional users, such as search and rescue teams, can access even more comprehensive plans.
In contrast to some smartphones, which now offer satellite connectivity for emergency communication via iOS 18 or similar services, the inReach Messenger Plus provides a continuous connection with friends and family. It remains a valuable tool for those who need reliable communication and safety features when off the grid. Users can keep others updated with their GPS location, download weather forecasts, and enhance rescue operations with the ability to send detailed images and audio of their situation.
The device also features a dedicated SOS button that connects users to Garmin’s 24/7 emergency coordination center, automatically transmitting their location. The inReach Messenger Plus is noted for its impressive battery life, capable of running for up to 600 hours while sending GPS data or text messages every 10 minutes.
