NVIDIA has announced that it will discontinue its high-performance GeForce RTX 4090 and RTX 4090D graphics cards starting next month. The move comes as part of NVIDIA’s strategy to transition from its current generation of GPUs to its next-generation lineup. The RTX 4090 and RTX 4090D, which were first launched in October 2022, have maintained their dominance in the graphics card market due to their exceptional performance.
Despite their high price tags, the RTX 4090 and RTX 4090D have remained highly sought after, with demand continuing to outstrip supply. As a result, the discontinuation is expected to lead to increased shortages and potentially even higher prices for these models in the coming weeks. This discontinuation will also help NVIDIA and its partners clear out existing inventories of the RTX 40 “Ada” series to make way for the upcoming RTX 50 series.
The RTX 5090 and RTX 5090D will take over as the flagship models in NVIDIA’s GPU lineup. The RTX 5090 is expected to feature a substantial upgrade with a rumored TDP of around 600W and new GDDR7 memory. This new generation aims to maintain NVIDIA’s position at the forefront of high-end gaming and professional graphics technology.
In the competitive landscape, NVIDIA’s move to retire the RTX 4090 and RTX 4090D is anticipated to solidify its lead, as competitors like AMD and Intel focus more on mainstream and high-end segments rather than challenging NVIDIA’s top-tier offerings. The upcoming RTX 50 “Blackwell” series is poised to build upon the success of its predecessors, continuing NVIDIA’s legacy of innovation in the GPU space.
As NVIDIA prepares to launch the RTX 5090 and RTX 5090D, more detailed information about the next-generation GPUs is expected to be released in the coming months.
