With iOS 18 rolling out today, AirPods users can look forward to several significant updates, particularly for the AirPods Pro 2. The new Siri interactions, which allow users to accept or silence calls and notifications through head movements, are available across all AirPods models. Additionally, all AirPods models will benefit from the new Voice Isolation feature, which aims to provide clearer call quality.
However, Personalized Spatial Audio for gaming is available only for AirPods (3rd generation), AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max. To access these new features, make sure your AirPods are updated to the latest firmware version.
AirPods usually update automatically when connected to a Bluetooth-enabled device like an iPhone, iPad, or Mac, as long as they are within Wi-Fi range and charging. After the update is installed, you will receive a notification the next time you use your AirPods.
For those using AirPods Pro 2, you may have already received the update, which brings the firmware to version 7A294. To verify if your AirPods have the latest firmware, connect them to your device and check the firmware version. On an iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Bluetooth, tap the info button next to your AirPods, and scroll down to the About section. On a Mac, navigate to the Apple menu > System Information > Bluetooth and locate your AirPods’ name. The latest firmware version is also listed on Apple’s official website.
If your AirPods do not appear to be running the latest firmware, you can initiate an over-the-air update by connecting them to your Mac. For AirPods Max, use a lightning-to USB cable, while AirPods and AirPods Pro should be placed in their charging case, which is then connected to your computer. Following these steps should initiate the update process.
Keeping your AirPods up to date before iOS 18 is released will ensure you can immediately enjoy the new features. If you find that the new features are not functioning after updating to iOS 18, verify your firmware version to ensure the software has been properly installed on your AirPods.
