Music lovers no longer need to worry about losing their cherished playlists when switching between streaming platforms, thanks to a simple yet highly effective playlist transfer tool developed by two friends from France. In 2013, Thomas Magnano and Benoit Herbreteau, passionate music enthusiasts, created Soundiiz, a third-party tool that allows users to transfer playlists between various music services, including Apple Music, Spotify, YouTube Music, and Tidal.
Initially intended as a side project, Soundiiz became a groundbreaking solution in the music streaming world. The tool works as a bridge between streaming services, utilizing existing APIs to make playlists portable across platforms. With its intuitive user interface, users can seamlessly connect their accounts and transfer playlists, including those created by other users. Soundiiz supports over 20 streaming services, making it an essential tool for anyone looking to switch platforms without sacrificing their playlists.
Magnano and Herbreteau’s journey began when they attempted to create a music search interface by combining inputs from various online sources. In the process, they discovered the potential of a playlist transfer tool. Magnano explains, “I had to work with APIs and test compatibility between different services. While doing this, I created playlists and moved them between services, just for myself internally.” Realizing the broader potential, the two friends turned their discovery into Soundiiz, which quickly gained traction.
Soundiiz gained recognition when it partnered with Jay-Z’s music platform Tidal in 2015, helping users transfer their Spotify playlists to Tidal. However, the founders insisted that the tool should allow users to both import and export playlists, ensuring flexibility across services.
Since then, Soundiiz has become a staple in the music streaming world, helping millions of users transfer over 220 million playlists. Despite its success, Magnano and Herbreteau have resisted outside investments to maintain control and keep Soundiiz affordable. While the tool offers a free version, it imposes certain limitations, such as a 200-song cap on playlists. A premium plan is available for $4.50 per month, allowing users to transfer longer playlists and speed up the process.
Despite the dominance of streaming giants like Spotify, which has yet to introduce a similar transfer tool, Soundiiz has thrived, relying on organic growth and search engine visibility. The tool has carved a niche in the market, even without major marketing efforts.
