Apple has introduced a highly anticipated new feature in its iOS 18 beta that will allow iPhone users to pause video recordings directly within the Camera app. The feature, which was initially spotted by 9to5Mac, is set to be available on all iPhone models supported by iOS 18. The full OS update is scheduled to roll out on September 16, 2024.
This new functionality will give iPhone users more control over their video recording sessions, finally allowing multiple shots to be filmed within a single video. Up until now, iPhone users have been required to shoot separate video clips and then edit them together, adding an extra step to the process. With iOS 18, however, users will be able to pause their recordings, switch between camera lenses, and resume filming seamlessly without needing to stitch together multiple clips.
Once the iPhone is updated to iOS 18, users will see a pause button added to the Camera app’s video interface. After pressing pause, the button will change into a record button, allowing users to resume filming whenever they are ready. This makes it easy to adjust zoom levels or switch between the phone’s various lenses while the video is paused. The ability to switch between lenses while recording opens up a new level of creative possibilities for users who want to capture different perspectives in the same video.
The pause function made its debut in the iOS 18 Release Candidate beta, which was seeded to developers following Apple’s “It’s Glowtime” event where the iPhone 16 was unveiled. However, unlike some of the more advanced “Camera Control” features that are exclusive to the iPhone 16, the pause recording function will be available on all iPhones that support iOS 18, ensuring a wider audience can benefit from this useful addition.
For users eager to streamline their video recording process and add flexibility to their filming, the iOS 18 update will be a welcome change. As Apple continues to improve its camera features, the pause recording function is a notable enhancement that reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to innovation in mobile photography and videography.
