Connections is the newest puzzle sensation from The New York Times, adding to its already impressive lineup of word games. This game challenges you to sort a list of 16 words into four hidden categories by figuring out how the words are related. Each puzzle has a unique twist, and the difficulty can vary. A new challenge drops every night at midnight. Just like with Wordle, you can track your progress, build a winning streak, and even compare scores with friends to see who’s the ultimate word whiz.

How to Play NYT Connections

In Connections, you’ll start with a grid of 16 random words, and your job is to figure out how they group into four sets of four words. These sets are based on how the words connect to each other. The connections can be about anything: famous video game titles, book sequels, different shades of red, popular chain restaurants—you name it.

It’s tricky because some words might seem like they belong in more than one group, but there’s only one correct solution. To make things easier, you can shuffle and rearrange the words to help visualize the possible connections better.

The groups are also color-coded to give you a clue about their difficulty. The yellow group is usually the easiest to figure out, followed by green, blue, and the trickiest, purple.

To play, just pick four words you think belong together and hit ‘Submit.’ If you’re correct, the four words will disappear, and the theme connecting them will be revealed. But watch out—if you guess wrong, it’ll count as a mistake, and you’re only allowed four mistakes before the game ends!
