Connections is the newest brain-teaser from the New York Times, where your challenge is to sort a set of 16 words into four hidden categories. The trick is figuring out how the words are related to each other. The puzzle refreshes every day at midnight, and the difficulty can vary from day to day. Just like Wordle, you can track your streak and compare scores with friends.

Some days are tougher than others, but don’t worry—we’ve got some hints and tips to help you out. And if you’re still stuck, we’ll reveal the answers at the end.

How to Play Connections

When you start a game of Connections, you’ll see a grid of 16 words. Your goal is to group these words into four sets of four by identifying the common link between them. These groups could be anything—like video game titles, book series, shades of red, or chain restaurant names.

Sometimes, it’s tricky because certain words might seem like they belong to more than one group, but there’s only one correct solution. You can rearrange the grid to get a better view of possible connections.

Each group you find is color-coded based on difficulty. The yellow group is usually the easiest, followed by green, blue, and finally purple, which is the hardest.

To play, just pick four words you think are connected, then hit “Submit.” If you’re right, those words will disappear from the grid, and the theme that links them will be revealed. If you’re wrong, it counts as a mistake, and you’re only allowed four mistakes before the game ends.
