Apple has introduced the first version of its much-anticipated artificial intelligence suite, Apple Intelligence, as part of the developer beta for iOS 18.1. The new software, which was first announced at Apple’s WWDC 2024, aims to enhance Siri, automatically generate emails and images, and better manage notifications.
Available now for developers, Apple Intelligence can also be accessed through similar updates for iPad and Mac. Users interested in testing the service must register via a waitlist in Apple’s settings app after updating, as the service requires interaction with Apple’s servers for more complex requests.
The full public release of Apple Intelligence is expected later this year, but the 18.1 version indicates it will not debut alongside the new iPhone hardware, which is set to launch with iOS 18 in the fall.
Apple views this AI initiative as a crucial advancement, with hopes that its deep integration with the operating system will drive significant upgrades in the coming years. Notably, Apple Intelligence will be exclusive to iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models and newer.
Bank of America analyst Wamsi Mohan anticipates that the introduction of these AI features will help sustain strong iPhone sales through the next upgrade cycle, potentially extending into 2025.
