At the Galaxy Unpacked event held in Paris, Samsung showcased its latest products, including new foldable smartphones, smartwatches, and its first smart ring, the Galaxy Ring. TM Roh, head of Samsung’s mobile division, emphasized the company’s push into artificial intelligence (AI) as a key driver for future sales.
Galaxy AI Push: Samsung’s new suite of AI features, branded Galaxy AI, is designed to enhance user experience across its devices. Key features include a language interpreter and a Notes app capable of recording, transcribing, and summarizing audio. Roh highlighted that Galaxy AI aims to make technology more intuitive and user-friendly, reinforcing Samsung’s strategy to attract customers in a competitive market.
“We are reinforcing and bringing more AI capabilities to our products,” Roh told CNBC, underscoring the importance of AI in driving new product purchases.
Monetizing AI: Samsung is aiming to increase its focus on software to complement its hardware sales. Unlike Apple, which integrates software and services with hardware to drive revenue, Samsung’s phones primarily run Google’s Android OS, limiting its control over software. Samsung is working on enhancing its Bixby AI assistant and other native apps to provide more value to users and potentially create new revenue streams.
Roh mentioned that Samsung is considering subscription models for its AI services, but emphasized that any decision will prioritize consumer benefits alongside business interests.
Future Products and Innovations: Samsung, a pioneer in foldable phones, hinted at expanding its hardware offerings. Roh suggested that as technology and ecosystem maturity progress, Samsung could introduce new foldable devices in various product categories.
Additionally, Samsung is developing a mixed reality headset, in collaboration with Google and Qualcomm. Although specifics about the device are sparse, Roh mentioned that a new “mixed reality platform” will be announced within the year, potentially enhancing Samsung’s presence in the mixed reality space.
Samsung’s emphasis on AI and innovative hardware aims to solidify its position in the tech industry as it prepares to compete with rivals like Apple, which has recently unveiled its own AI and mixed reality initiatives.
