PARIS — Samsung introduced its latest foldable smartphones on Wednesday, showcasing the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 at its Galaxy Unpacked event in Paris. These new devices, enhanced with Samsung’s Galaxy AI suite, aim to solidify the company’s leadership in the foldable phone market while encouraging users to upgrade their devices.
The Galaxy Z Fold6, starting at $1,899.99, unfolds like a book, featuring a 7.6-inch display and a triple-lens camera on the back. Samsung claims it is the company’s thinnest foldable yet, at just 12.1 millimeters thick when folded. The Galaxy Z Flip6, which starts at $1,099.99, offers a traditional flip phone design with a bendable screen. Both models will be available starting July 24.
Rising Competition and Consumer Habits
Samsung’s new foldable phones enter the market at a time when the company faces growing competition and a shift in consumer behavior, with many users holding onto their devices longer.
“The ongoing challenge remains of getting users to upgrade with what is perceived to be incremental improvements on previous models, especially for the Fold; more so when everyone is tightening their belts,” Paolo Pescatore, founder of PP Foresight, commented.
AI-Enhanced Features
The integration of advanced AI features is a significant highlight of the new foldable phones. These features aim to enhance user experience and offer compelling reasons for consumers to upgrade. Key AI features include:
- Interpreter Mode: Available on the Z Fold6, this mode allows users to fold the phone halfway and use both the back and inside screens to translate conversations in real-time between different languages.
- Live Translate: Initially launched for Samsung’s own phone app, this feature is now extended to third-party apps like WhatsApp, enabling real-time translation of phone calls.
- Suggested Replies: The Z Flip6 offers AI-generated reply suggestions based on the user’s messaging style, reducing the need to manually type responses.
Despite the emphasis on AI, analysts remain cautious about the appeal of these features in driving upgrades. Samsung introduced its flagship S24 series with AI features in January, and questions persist about whether these advancements are enough to motivate consumers to invest in new devices.
Market Dynamics and Future Prospects
Samsung’s introduction of the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 occurs as the foldable market becomes increasingly competitive. The company, which pioneered the foldable smartphone category in 2019, now faces numerous rivals launching their own foldable devices.
“We are still in the early days of foldables as they’re not sought-after or must-have devices among consumers. Samsung’s relentless commitment is undeniable, but more and more rivals have or are launching their own foldable devices. This is fast becoming the next battleground as they all seek to lure users to premium high-end devices,” Pescatore said.
Adding to the competition, Apple recently unveiled its AI suite, Apple Intelligence, which is expected to debut in the upcoming iPhone 16. This move by Apple adds pressure on Samsung to distinguish its foldable devices in the market.
“Consumers are savvier and taking their time with the next purchase of their smartphone. They know Apple typically releases a new smartphone in September and are happy to wait and see what others announce in the meantime. All eyes are firmly on the new iPhone 16 powered by Apple Intelligence,” Pescatore added.
As Samsung continues to innovate and enhance its devices with AI capabilities, the success of the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 will be crucial in maintaining its market position and attracting consumers in an increasingly competitive landscape.
