In a shocking revelation at Comic-Con 2024, Marvel Studios announced that Robert Downey Jr. will be reprising his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but not as Iron Man. The acclaimed actor will be taking on the mantle of Victor Von Doom, also known as Doctor Doom, in the upcoming Avengers movie titled ‘Avengers: Doomsday’.
The news was unveiled by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige during the studio’s highly anticipated panel at the convention. Downey Jr. himself made a surprise appearance on stage, removing a Doctor Doom mask to the delight of the crowd.
“New mask, same task,” Downey Jr. said, hinting at the complexity of his new character. “What can I say, I like playing complicated characters.”
The casting decision marks a significant departure from Downey Jr.’s iconic portrayal of Tony Stark/Iron Man, which he embodied for over a decade in the MCU. However, the actor has expressed his openness to returning to the franchise in a different capacity.
In a recent interview with Variety, Downey Jr. stated, “It’s just crazily in my DNA. Probably the most like-me character I’ve ever played, even though he’s way cooler than I am. I’ve become surprisingly open-minded to the idea.”
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ will be directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, who previously helmed ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’. The film will also feature the cast of the upcoming ‘Fantastic Four’ movie, as well as appearances from the casts of ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ and ‘Thunderbolts’.
