Amazon’s Alexa has become an indispensable virtual assistant for many households, offering a wide range of capabilities from managing tasks to controlling smart devices. However, one crucial function that Alexa lacks in the United States is the ability to directly call 911, the emergency contact number.
Despite this limitation, Alexa introduced the Emergency Assist feature in 2023, providing users with an alternative way to reach emergency services. With Emergency Assist, users can connect to a qualified representative who can then initiate a call to 911 on their behalf. While this may involve additional steps, it has proven to be effective in emergency situations, potentially saving lives.
The absence of direct 911 calling capability on Alexa devices in the U.S. is attributed to an FCC rule mandating that such devices must provide both location data and a callback number when making emergency calls. Although Alexa has the capability to fulfill these requirements, Amazon has chosen not to enable this functionality, thus preventing 911 calls from being made directly from Alexa devices.
Despite the availability of Emergency Assist, it’s advisable to make 911 calls from a landline whenever possible. Landlines provide emergency operators with crucial location information, ensuring a more efficient response in critical situations where communication may be limited.
