Apple’s MacBook Pro lineup has long been anticipated to feature OLED displays, especially after the launch of the M4 iPad Pro models with their high-end screens. Recent reports suggest that OLED MacBook Pros might finally debut in 2026, potentially making these high-end laptops even more attractive to users.
OLED MacBook Pros by 2026
According to Wccftech and analyst firm Omdia, Apple plans to introduce OLED technology in its MacBook Pro models by 2026. The inclusion of OLED displays will result in thinner laptops because OLED screens have individually lit pixels and do not require a backlight panel. These MacBooks are expected to use Tandem OLED displays, similar to those in the iPad Pros, which feature two OLED panels layered together for enhanced brightness and color clarity.
Reasons for the Delay
Omdia’s Senior Principal Analyst of Display Research, Ricky Part, suggests several reasons for the delayed introduction of OLED MacBook Pros:
- Cost of Manufacturing: OLED panels are expensive to produce, and Apple needs a higher demand for MacBook Pros to justify these costs.
- Production Facilities: Securing production facilities capable of manufacturing these OLED screens is another significant factor.
- Strategic Product Upgrades: Apple might be waiting for a future new chipset or other major upgrades to coincide with the OLED screen introduction, making the new MacBook Pro a more compelling purchase.
The move to OLED screens could significantly boost the MacBook Pro’s appeal, especially among creative professionals such as artists, videographers, filmmakers, animators, and editors who would benefit from the sharper, more vibrant displays. Omdia predicts that this shift could lead to a surge in OLED demand within the notebook market, potentially reaching over 60 million units by 2031.
While the wait for OLED MacBook Pros has been long, the potential benefits of such an upgrade are substantial. The improved display quality could make these laptops even more desirable to users with visually demanding tasks. However, the higher production costs will likely translate to higher consumer prices, making the OLED MacBook Pro one of the most expensive laptops on the market when it finally arrives.
