Elizabeth MacRae, the beloved actress renowned for her roles in Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., and General Hospital, peacefully passed away on May 27, 2024, in Fayetteville, North Carolina, at the age of 88. Born in Columbia, South Carolina, MacRae’s journey in acting began in her hometown of Fayetteville in 1956.
After completing her education in Washington, D.C., she ventured to New York City to pursue her acting aspirations. Her talent quickly caught the eye of casting directors, leading to her debut as a courtroom witness in CBS’s The Verdict Is Yours in 1958. Subsequently, she graced the screens of numerous popular television shows of the era, including Naked City, The Asphalt Jungle, and Dr. Kildare.
MacRae’s career soared when she landed the recurring role of Lou-Ann Poovie in Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., portraying the girlfriend of Jim Nabors’ titular character from 1966 to 1969. Her portrayal endeared her to audiences, cementing her place in television history. Additionally, she made significant contributions to the soap opera genre, notably starring as Meg Baldwin on General Hospital from 1969 to 1973, leaving an indelible mark on daytime drama.
Beyond television, MacRae showcased her versatility in film, voicing Ladyfish in The Incredible Mr. Limpet and appearing in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Conversation alongside Gene Hackman.
Despite her success in Hollywood, MacRae chose to leave the spotlight behind and return to New York City, dedicating herself to counseling individuals battling drug and alcohol addiction at the Freedom Institute.
