Stetson Bennett’s journey from collegiate success to the NFL took an unexpected turn when he left the Los Angeles Rams organization under mysterious circumstances in September 2023. Despite being drafted by the Rams in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, Bennett’s departure left fans and analysts puzzled, especially considering the potential opportunity for him to secure the backup quarterback role behind veteran Matthew Stafford.

At the time of Bennett’s departure, Rams head coach Sean McVay opted to keep the details private, citing respect for Bennett and the situation at hand. Speculation swirled as to the nature of Bennett’s absence, with McVay only disclosing that the issue was “bigger than” football. However, Rams general manager Les Snead shed some light on the situation, suggesting that Bennett may have been feeling the weight of his collegiate achievements, particularly leading the Georgia Bulldogs to consecutive national championships in 2021 and 2022.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding Bennett’s future with the Rams, he recently made a return to the team, participating in offseason training activities (OTAs) as they prepare for the upcoming 2024 NFL season. Bennett remained tight-lipped about the reasons behind his initial departure, opting to keep the matter “in house.”

The quarterback competition within the Rams’ ranks adds another layer of intrigue to Bennett’s return, as the team signed veteran Jimmy Garoppolo in the offseason. With Garoppolo slated to serve a two-game suspension, Bennett will have the opportunity to vie for the backup quarterback position alongside Garoppolo upon his return. McVay himself admitted uncertainty regarding Bennett’s return earlier in the year, further emphasizing the fluidity of the situation.

As the Rams gear up for the 2024 season, all eyes will be on Bennett and Garoppolo as they compete for a coveted spot on the roster, highlighting the unpredictability and competitiveness of the NFL landscape.
