Renowned American actress Amy Ryan, celebrated for her performances both on stage and screen, reflects on the enduring appeal of the beloved television series *The Office* across generations. Speaking to PEOPLE at the 2024 Tony Awards Meet the Nominees event, the 56-year-old star expressed her awe at the show’s ability to resonate with younger audiences even a decade after its conclusion.
“It’s incredible to see how the fan base for *The Office* keeps evolving and getting younger,” Ryan remarked, highlighting the timeless quality of the series. Speculating on the reasons behind its enduring popularity, the Academy Award-nominated actress suggested, “Perhaps they appreciate witnessing genuine human interactions without the distraction of phones.” She added, “There’s a reason why people continue to discover and enjoy it, and the humor still stands the test of time, which is truly remarkable.”
In a noteworthy development, a spin-off of *The Office* is currently in development at NBC, more than ten years after the original series concluded its successful nine-season run. The upcoming Peacock series, set to commence production in July, will star Irish actor and screenwriter Domhnall Gleeson alongside Italian actress Sabrina Impacciatore. According to Lisa Katz, President of NBC Universal Entertainment, the new comedy will introduce audiences to a fresh ensemble cast of characters within the setting of a daily newspaper.
Amy Ryan, known for her Tony-nominated performance in the Broadway revival of *Doubt: A Parable*, famously portrayed Holly Flax in *The Office*. Holly, an HR representative at Dunder Mifflin, shared a heartwarming romance with regional manager Michael Scott, played by Steve Carell. In the series’ seventh season, the couple decides to tie the knot and relocate to Colorado, where they start a family.
In a delightful coincidence, both Amy Ryan and her *The Office* co-star Steve Carell, aged 61, are currently gracing the Broadway stage this season. While Carell stars in a revival of *Uncle Vanya*, Ryan has stepped into the role of Doubt’s lead character, filling in for Tyne Daly due to health reasons. Reflecting on the experience, Ryan humorously recounted the initial apprehension she felt, likening it to a recurring nightmare. “It was terrifying,” she admitted. “But I guess I can finally cross that nightmare off my list – or maybe it’s a dream come true, depending on how you look at it.”
Additionally, it was recently announced that the 2024 Tony Awards will take place on Sunday, June 16, at the David H. Koch Theater in New York City’s Lincoln Center. Viewers can catch the ceremony on CBS and Paramount+ at 8 p.m. ET, with select awards also being presented during a pre-show on Pluto TV.
