Brian Wilson, renowned as one of the founding members of The Beach Boys band, has made headlines at 81 years old due to being placed under conservatorship to manage his personal and medical affairs amidst his battle with neurocognitive disorder. Wilson’s illustrious career with The Beach Boys catapulted the band to prominence during the 1960s, where he served as the bass guitarist.
The decision to place Wilson under conservatorship was initiated by his family and inner circle following the passing of his wife, Melinda Ledbetter Wilson, in January. Melinda had been responsible for overseeing many of Wilson’s tasks and affairs. In February, a petition was filed to establish conservatorship, and a Los Angeles senior court judge, Gus T May, granted approval after reviewing the evidence.
The evidence presented to the judge included a doctor’s diagnosis stating that Wilson suffers from a “major neurocognitive disorder” and is receiving medication for dementia. It was determined that Wilson lacks the capacity to make decisions regarding his health and well-being.
In light of this decision, the judge appointed two of Wilson’s longtime associates, publicist Jean Sievers and manager LeeAnn Hard, as his conservators. Wilson’s attorney confirmed that the musician understood and trusted the need for conservatorship and endorsed Sievers and Hard’s judgment.
Additionally, two of Wilson’s children, Cranie and Wendy Wilson, requested through their attorney that all of Wilson’s children be included in a group text concerning their father and consulted regarding his medical decisions. The judge granted approval for this request, ensuring that Wilson’s family remains informed and involved in his care.
