Ampere Computing made waves last year with the introduction of its AmpereOne Family of processors, boasting an impressive lineup of up to 192 single-threaded Ampere cores, setting a new standard in the industry.
Designed specifically for cloud efficiency and performance, these chips marked a significant milestone for Ampere as its first product based on a new custom core leveraging internal IP. CEO Renée James highlighted this as a pivotal moment, signaling a transformative shift in the sector.
James emphasized the importance of optimizing performance while maintaining sustainable power consumption, particularly in light of emerging applications like AI and the proliferation of connected devices. She underscored Ampere’s commitment to designing products that maximize performance within power constraints to drive innovation in the industry.
Looking ahead, Jeff Wittich, chief product officer at Ampere, shared insights into the company’s roadmap for future generations of the AmpereOne processors in a recent interview with The Next Platform.
Wittich revealed plans for an updated chip, dubbed AmpereOne-2, set to launch later this year. This iteration will feature enhancements such as 12 memory channels and an A2 core with improved performance, aligning with Ampere’s trajectory for innovation.
However, the most intriguing development lies in AmpereOne-3, slated for release in 2025. This third-generation chip is anticipated to feature a staggering 256 cores, etched using cutting-edge 3-nanometer processes from TSMC. The design will utilize a modified A2+ core with a two-chiplet architecture, potentially revolutionizing performance capabilities.
Furthermore, The Next Platform anticipates that AmpereOne-3 will support PCI-Express 6.0 I/O controllers and incorporate advanced features like DDR5 memory controllers, although specifics remain speculative.
Wittich emphasized Ampere’s rapid progress in the realm of computing, highlighting significant enhancements with each chip release, including performance improvements, efficiency gains, and security enhancements. The company’s adoption of a chiplet approach with the AmpereOne-3 underscores its commitment to driving innovation and delivering consistent performance across its product lineup.
With the AmpereOne-3 currently in production at TSMC, anticipation is building for its forthcoming launch, poised to further redefine the landscape of cloud computing and data center technology.
