English actor Rebecca Hall, known for her role as scientist Dr. Ilene Andrews in the Godzilla vs. Kong franchise, believes that the success of such epic spectacles depends not only on impressive visual effects but also on the emotional depth they convey.
In discussing the sequel, Godzilla vs. Kong: The New Empire, Hall emphasizes the importance of intertwining the human storylines with the grandeur of the monstrous battles. She remarks, “If you parallel that with the human storylines, that’s when it really sings, because there’s a lot going on. You get to laugh, be moved and also have an adrenaline thrill ride — and that’s why it feels so rewarding.”
For Hall, connecting with her characters on an emotional level is essential to her craft. Despite portraying characters vastly different from herself, she finds empathy for their motivations and choices. “Often, the characters are very different from me and make very complicated choices. And that is something I may not understand or relate to, but I surely empathize with their motivations,” she explains.
Reflecting on her journey within the franchise, Hall draws parallels between the nuanced dynamics of the titular monsters and her character’s evolution. She notes the presence of empathy in the monster-verse, particularly in the portrayal of Godzilla and Kong. In the latest installment, Hall is pleased to take on a more significant role, with her character, Ilene, assuming greater responsibilities. “Ilene is now a boss, in charge of all this stuff, and has responsibilities,” she concludes, expressing her enthusiasm for the expanded role.
