Apple Maps has come a long way since its rocky debut in 2012, evolving over the past decade to become a formidable competitor to Google Maps. With its impressive array of tools and features, Apple Maps now stands toe-to-toe with its Google counterpart. One of its standout features on the Apple Watch, topographic maps, is now poised to expand its reach to iPhones, Macs, and even the Vision Pro headset.
According to reports from MacRumors, snippets of code suggest that the topographic maps feature from watchOS will soon be integrated into iOS, macOS, and visionOS. This feature enhances map readability by providing additional detail such as contour lines, walking trails, elevation information, and points of interest.
While the code for topographic maps was introduced to iOS, macOS, and visionOS in 2023, it has remained inactive until now. However, with the upcoming releases of iOS 18, macOS 15, and visionOS 2, Apple is set to activate this feature. MacRumors has examined backend files for these operating systems and confirmed that the code is active, indicating that users can expect the feature to roll out soon beyond the confines of the Apple Watch.
Initially launched with watchOS 10, topographic maps were highlighted as a key feature of the Apple Watch Ultra 2, targeting outdoor enthusiasts. However, if the reports are accurate, users will no longer require Apple’s priciest smartwatch to access detailed and informative maps.
Currently, the feature is only available in the US, with Apple gradually expanding its support across the country since its inception. However, there is no timeline yet for its availability in other regions.
The addition of topographic maps to the iPhone is just one of the anticipated features of iOS 18. Apple’s ambitious plans to enhance the scope and capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) on its devices have garnered significant attention. This includes integrating AI into popular apps like Apple Music and Pages, as well as exploring partnerships with industry leaders like Google and OpenAI to introduce an AI chatbot to iOS.
