Barry Keoghan’s achievements in the realm of comic book universes extend far beyond the coveted EGOT status. Instead, he has made a remarkable mark by gracing both the Marvel and DC cinematic universes. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Keoghan stepped into the enigmatic role of Druig, a mind-controlling antihero, making his debut in Phase 4’s “Eternals” in 2021. Meanwhile, in the DC universe, he portrayed the notorious villain, Joker, in Matt Reeves’ “The Batman,” leaving a lasting impression despite having just four minutes of screen time and a ten-minute deleted scene.

Originally, Keoghan had set his sights on a different character within the DC Universe, hoping to bring a distinct performance to the franchise. However, his audition for “The Batman” didn’t quite align with his initial aspirations. As disclosed in a recent Esquire interview, Keoghan had initially tried out for the role of Batman’s foe, The Riddler.

In his preparation for the audition, Keoghan invested ten dollars in a cane and hat, meticulously storyboarded his own scene, and donned suspenders fashioned in an ‘X’ shape across his back. Although his scene was entirely original and somewhat unconventional, Keoghan aimed to imbue it with a Kubrick-esque vibe, emphasizing symmetry and a sense of swagger combined with endearment. Despite his inventive approach, the role eventually went to Paul Dano. However, fate had other plans, as Keoghan later landed the iconic role of the Joker, the Clown Prince of Crime.

Reflecting on the pivotal moment when he learned of his casting as the Joker, Keoghan recounted his agent’s secretive revelation to GQ in 2022, emphasizing the need for utmost confidentiality. With his lips sealed, Keoghan patiently awaited the opportunity to unveil his portrayal to eager fans, generating anticipation for his continued involvement in “The Batman” series. As audiences eagerly await the release of “The Batman 2,” Keoghan’s multifaceted performances in both Marvel and DC universes promise to captivate viewers further.
