Chris Hemsworth, now inseparable from the role of the God of Thunder in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), revealed that he didn’t even receive a callback after his initial audition for Thor. Surprisingly, it was his younger brother, Liam Hemsworth, who came very close to securing the role of the MCU hero.
In an interview with Wired while discussing the most searched questions about him on the internet, Chris Hemsworth recounted the audition process for Thor. He explained, “I auditioned for Thor many years ago, probably 11 or 12 years ago. And I didn’t get a callback. I think my audition sucked. I think that was the response I got.”
Interestingly, Liam Hemsworth then auditioned and made it to the final five candidates for the role but ultimately didn’t secure it. The producers felt he was a bit too young. It was at this point that Chris Hemsworth’s manager suggested, “Well, he does have an older brother,” leading to Chris getting another chance at the audition.
Chris Hemsworth then went through the audition process again, re-auditioning multiple times with a different attitude. He acknowledged that the motivation of his younger brother being considered for the role and the experience gained from a couple of films he did between the auditions contributed to his improved confidence.
Ultimately, Chris Hemsworth’s persistence paid off, and he not only secured the role of Thor but has since become synonymous with the character, portraying him in multiple MCU films, including the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder. The story serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of casting decisions and the twists and turns that can lead to iconic roles in the world of Hollywood.
