Harrison Ford, widely recognized as one of the best actors of his generation with iconic roles in Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Blade Runner, and more, revealed that he has regrets about rejecting certain roles in his career. One notable role he passed on was in the political thriller Syriana, directed by Steve Gaghan and starring George Clooney.

In an admission of regret, Ford shared with the Irish Examiner, “I saw a bit of [director] Steve Gaghan’s movie Syriana, and I wish I’d played the part that was offered to me – George [Clooney’s] part.” Ford elaborated on his decision, expressing that he didn’t feel strongly enough about the truth of the material at the time. He acknowledged making a mistake, stating, “I think the film underwent some changes, and I think a lot of it is very truthful. The things that I thought weren’t were obviated after I left the table.”

Syriana, released in 2005, is a political thriller loosely based on a true story that follows a United States energy company facing turmoil in the Middle East. George Clooney, who took on the role Ford was offered, earned an Oscar for his performance. The film itself received critical acclaim and garnered a nomination in the Best Original Screenplay category. Despite Ford’s hindsight realization, Syriana remains a significant piece of Clooney’s filmography and the political thriller genre.
