The enduring popularity of Yellowstone, hailed as one of the best western TV series, has resulted in a constant demand for horses to populate the expansive landscapes of the Dutton family’s ranch. Managing such a requirement can be a costly endeavor, but Paramount has found a clever way to cut costs: series creator Taylor Sheridan provides many of the horses himself.

In a statement to Four Sixes Ranch, Sheridan revealed, “I supply most of the horses to Yellowstone,” further adding, “And then I have horses that I show and breed. Right now, I’ve got probably as many horses as I have cattle. And I have too many horses.”

This revelation offers a fascinating behind-the-scenes glimpse into the production of Yellowstone, showcasing the multifaceted involvement of its creator. Sheridan not only crafts the intricate narrative of the series but also contributes to the authentic visual elements by utilizing his own horses.

As the Yellowstone universe expands with spin-offs like The Bass Reeves Story, 1923, and 6666 making their presence felt on Paramount Plus, Sheridan’s horse supply may need to be strategically managed to accommodate the various projects. Nonetheless, the fact that the cast rides on horses from Sheridan’s personal collection adds an extra layer of authenticity to the series, aligning with the commitment to realism that has contributed to Yellowstone’s success in portraying the rugged beauty of the American West.
