Amazon is reportedly expanding “The Boys” universe into Mexico by developing a Spanish-language spinoff of the popular dark superhero series based on Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s comic books. While specific plot details remain undisclosed, sources indicate that the spinoff, akin to “The Boys,” would be produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios.

Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, known for his recent work on the screenplay of the DC film “Blue Beetle” starring Xolo Maridueña, is reportedly attached to write for the spinoff. The executive producers include “The Boys” creator Erik Kripke from Kripke Enterprises, along with Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver of Point Grey Pictures, and Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty of Original Film. Discussions are ongoing for Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal to join as executive producers under their La Corriente del Golfo banner.

If the project proceeds, it would mark the third series set in “The Boys” universe, following the original show, which is set to premiere its fourth season in 2024. Recently, Prime Video launched “Gen V,” a series situated in a superhero college run by Vought International, and debuted the animated anthology series “The Boys Presents: Diabolical,” featuring standalone stories with original cast members reprising their roles in voice acting.

Amazon has been exploring local language productions to expand their streaming content, as seen in their plans for spinoffs of the high-budget spy series “Citadel” set in various locations worldwide.

“The Boys” has been a standout hit among Amazon’s streaming originals since its 2019 debut, consistently charting high on Nielsen streaming rankings during new episode releases. The show has also earned eight Emmy nominations, including a nomination for Best Drama Series in 2021.
