Detroit Lions star wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown didn’t hold back when addressing fans who were criticizing the team’s recent hiring of Drew Petzing as their new offensive coordinator.
Earlier this month, the Lions parted ways with John Morton after just one season as offensive coordinator. The move surprised some, but the team moved quickly and named Petzing, who most recently served as the OC for the Arizona Cardinals, as Morton’s replacement.
The announcement didn’t sit well with some Lions fans, many of whom questioned the team’s decision on social media. They expressed doubts, concerns, and sometimes outright frustration over Petzing’s hire. But St. Brown had a blunt message for them: trust the process and stop overreacting.
“Do you guys have no trust in Dan [Campbell] and the Lions? Do you think they’d just hire a random dude? Be for real,” St. Brown said during a recent episode of his St. Brown podcast. “You think they don’t know what they’re doing?… Most of you guys don’t really know much about anything, about any ball, and you’re tweeting about a coach who was hired that you guys don’t like because of X, Y, Z.”
St. Brown made it clear he appreciates the fan base, but he wants people to hold back before jumping to conclusions. “Don’t get me wrong, I love all Lions fans. But they are so quick to make judgments about who we hired, who we did this. Bro, relax. Calm down. Let the whole thing play out. Just let it play out. Relax.”
His comments come after a disappointing 2025 season for Detroit, which only added to fans’ sense of urgency. Detroit fans have never seen their team reach the Super Bowl, let alone win one, so it’s understandable that patience can be in short supply.
Still, St. Brown’s point is valid. Judging a coach before seeing them in action is risky. Petzing hasn’t had a chance to work with the Lions yet, implement his system, or show how he fits into the team’s plans. Fans may feel anxious, but giving him time could pay off.
For now, St. Brown is asking fans to take a deep breath, trust the team’s leadership, and wait to see how Petzing performs in Detroit. The Lions have made bold moves before, and this hire might just be another step toward turning the team into a serious contender.
