When Curt Cignetti became Indiana’s head football coach, he made one bold promise. Asked how he would attract recruits and transfers, he said it plainly. “It’s pretty simple. I win. Google me.”

Two years later, that statement could not be more true. After Indiana finished a perfect 16-0 season by winning the College Football Playoff national championship, Googling Cignetti’s name now triggers a playful animation that celebrates his victory with a banner reading, “Yup, he won.” It is a rare and fitting tribute from the tech giant for one of the most remarkable seasons in modern college football.

Indiana was led by Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza, who delivered a twisting, diving fourth-down touchdown that became the game’s defining moment. The Hoosiers beat Miami 27-21 to complete their historic season. Indiana’s defense also made a key play late in the game. Defensive back Jamari Sharpe intercepted a pass from Miami quarterback Carson Beck in the final moments, stopping a potential comeback and securing the win.

This championship was Indiana’s first College Football Playoff national title and immediately transformed the program’s identity. It also validated Cignetti’s career. He began coaching at Division II IUP in 2011, where he went 53-17, following in the footsteps of his legendary father, Frank. He later led Elon and then James Madison, compiling a 52-9 record, reaching an FCS title game, and guiding the Dukes into the FBS.

When Indiana hired him in late 2023 after a disappointing three-win season, few expected such results. Now the Hoosiers are champions, and even Google is celebrating Cignetti’s rise to the top.
