Actor-director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer, were found dead at their Los Angeles home on Sunday afternoon. TMZ first reported the discovery, though the identities of the victims were initially unknown. Police later confirmed that the bodies were indeed Reiner and Singer as an investigation into the cause of death began.

The family released a statement confirming the tragic loss. “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time,” the statement read, as reported by Variety.

Friends and colleagues also expressed their grief. Norman Lear and his family shared a note, remembering their close bond with Reiner. “The Lear Family is devastated by the deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner. Norman often referred to Rob as a son, and their relationship was extraordinary. Rob and Michele spent every breath trying to make this country a better place through their art, activism, philanthropy, and love for family and friends. Lyn Lear said, ‘The world is unmistakably darker tonight, and we are left bereft.’”

The Los Angeles Fire Department received a medical emergency call on December 14 at around 3:30 PM. When responders arrived, they found a 78-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman dead. Their identities were later confirmed as Rob Reiner and Michele Singer. PEOPLE reported that their son, Nick, is currently being questioned as a prime suspect, with authorities considering possible homicide. No arrests have been made so far. Reports indicate that their daughter, Romy, was the first to discover the bodies in their home.
