Indians living in the United States are facing a surge in online threats, prompting the Indian American Advocacy Council (IAAC) to contact the FBI. The group said hateful content targeting Indians could escalate into real-world violence if not addressed.

Much of the online hostility has been linked to the H-1B visa program, under which Indians make up more than 70% of applicants. Social media posts have accused Indians of “taking American jobs” and, in some cases, have even encouraged “mass violence against Indians,” according to the IAAC.

Rajeev Sharma, a founding member of the IAAC, called the language “dehumanizing and, at times, genocidal,” and said it is “deeply unsettling and frustrating.” The council emphasized that such rhetoric is dangerous and has no place in America.

The IAAC is calling on US law enforcement and social media platforms to remove posts promoting violence and suspend users who repeatedly break the rules. They also praised those speaking out in defense of the Indian-American community.
