New York is dealing with a serious flu spike.
The state recorded the highest number of flu cases ever seen in a single week. Health officials confirmed the news on Friday.
According to the New York State Department of Health, 71,123 people tested positive for the flu in the week ending December 20, 2025. That number is up 38% from the week before. No other week has been higher since flu reporting began in 2004.
State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald said the situation is being closely watched. He said officials are tracking hospital bed capacity to understand how badly hospitals may be affected by respiratory illnesses.
Hospitalizations are rising fast. Flu related hospital admissions jumped 63% in one week. The number climbed from 2,251 to 3,666 statewide.
So far this season, New York has reported 189,312 flu cases.
Earlier in December, the state officially declared flu activity widespread. That decision triggered new rules for healthcare workers. Unvaccinated staff are now required to wear masks in patient care areas.
Health officials say more testing does play a role in higher case counts. Labs now use broader testing panels that catch more infections. Even so, they say this flu season is hitting more people than usual.
Flu season normally peaks in January. That means cases could still rise.
The health department stressed that vaccination is the best way to avoid severe illness or death. The flu shot is available for anyone 6 months or older. It can be found at pharmacies, clinics, and doctors’ offices across the state.
Officials also urge simple precautions. Wash hands often. Avoid close contact with sick people. Stay home if you feel unwell. Cover coughs and sneezes. Clean surfaces that are touched frequently.
