The San Francisco 49ers are really happy to have Christian McCaffrey back and healthy right now. He’s their main running back and a big part of their team. But, here’s the thing, McCaffrey is not getting any younger, and he’s had some injuries in the past. So, the 49ers might want to start thinking about who could be the next big running back for their team in the future.
Sports writer Grant Cohn from Sports Illustrated has an idea: The 49ers could try to trade a middle-round draft pick to get Breece Hall from the New York Jets.
Why Breece Hall? Well, Hall played college football at Iowa State, and guess what? That’s the same school where Brock Purdy, the 49ers’ quarterback, played. So, these two already know each other pretty well. That connection could make things smoother when Hall joins the 49ers.
Hall is pretty good, in 2024, he ran and caught the ball for 1,359 yards, and in 2023 he had even more, 1,585 yards. He’s great at catching passes and running fast, kind of like a younger version of McCaffrey. He’s not quite as good yet, but he has the potential.
The Jets might be ready to let Hall go. Their new coach, Aaron Glenn, hinted that the Jets want to give more chances to their other running backs. Maybe a fresh start with the 49ers would be good for Hall.
We’ve seen this kind of thing work before. McCaffrey got a big boost in his career when he moved from the Carolina Panthers to the 49ers. And Saquon Barkley, another running back, really took off when he left the New York Giants for the Philadelphia Eagles.
So, Hall could be the future running back for the 49ers after McCaffrey. It sounds like a smart move for the team to try and make this trade happen.
