Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of London and Berlin to show solidarity with the demonstrations in the United States over the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. His death was captured on video showing a white policeman kneeling on his neck and Mr. Floyd gasping for breath. Mr Floyd could be heard saying ‘I can’t breathe’ but the police officers did not listen and he was choked to death.
The protesters were kneeling in London’s Trafalgar Square, chanting “No justice, no peace”. Later, they marched past the Houses of Parliament and ended the march in front of the US Embassy.
The Metropolitan police arrested 5 people for lockdown violations and assault on police. Several hundred protesters were also staging a rally outside the US Embassy in Berlin, holding up posters that said ‘Justice for George Floyd’, ‘Stop killing us’ and ‘Who’s neckst’.
George Floyd’s death triggered a wave of protests across the U.S., unleashing long simmering anger over racial bias in the American criminal justice system.
Some demonstrations turned violent as protesters blocked traffic, set fires to buildings and clashed with riot police, who fired tear gas and plastic bullets to restore order.
