Former Indian goalkeeper Prasanta Dora passed away aged 44

Delhi: Former Indian goalkeeper Prasanta Dora passed away aged 44 on Tuesday. He was suffering from Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) and was admitted to a hospital in Kolkata on 28, December 2020.

He played for Mohun Bagan Athletic Club as a goalkeeper and also for the Indian National team. The Mohun Bagan and All India Football Federation condole the ultimate demise of the player. Dora made his international debut against Nepal in the SAF Games in Kathmandu in 1999 and India went on to win a bronze medal at that time. He represented the Indian team at international in 4 official matches.

“We are deeply saddened by the untimely demise of former Mohun Bagan and Indian National team goalkeeper Prasanta Dora. He was part of Mohun Bagan in 2001 and then from 2003 to 05. His heroics under the bar helped #Marines to win the 2003 IFA Shield. Rest in Peace Prasanta Dora,” tweeted Mohun Bagan.

He was also the goalkeeper of the Bengal team when they lifted back-to-back Santosh Trophy titles and was part of East Bengal’s triumphant squad which won CFL in 1999. He also helped Mohun Bagan to win the IFA Shield in 2003, the Airlines Gold Cup in 2004 & 2005, and the CFL in 2005.

AIFF president Praful Patel in his condolence message said: “Prasanta Dora was a very talented goalkeeper who played with repute at the international and domestic level. My condolences to his family. We pray for his soul to rest in peace.”
