Bartomeu’s position was under scrutiny and immense speculation since last season and the matter aggravated after Barcelona’s 8-2 loss to FC Bayern Munich in the Champions League Quarter-final in August, which was played in Portugal due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation. The fans along with quite a few members of the first-team squad as well as the board of directors were calling for Bartomeu to be sacked.
The transfer saga of club legend Lionel Messi added more fuel to the fire as the Argentine player blamed the entire dismal situation of the club on the president and further claimed that Bartomeu failed to live up to his word as he had promised that Lionel Messi would be allowed to leave the club on a free transfer.
The reports suggest that Bartomeu preferred to resign from his role before hand, rather than to force the fans and the board members to vote on his future in a vote of confidence against the club president. This event was a much longed one for the club fans and supporters all around the world as it was imminent that the club needed a new direction.
