Expectations of restoring peace in Europe after several years of ravaging violence have once again emerged following the recent series of diplomatic interactions in Geneva<\/a>. With the war still playing a very high price on either side, there has been a fresh wave of dialogue that has provided a tentative hope that some negotiated resolution can still be achieved.<\/p>\n

Ukrainian officials reported that Russia stated during recent negotiations that it would be willing to accept a proposal by the United States on post-war security guarantees to Ukraine. In an interview on national television, the chief of staff of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy<\/a> said so.<\/p>\n

An example is the Russian side stating during the final talks that they would accept the security guarantees provided to Ukraine by the United States, as Budanov stated, citing the discussions that were made in Geneva. Although they did not come to an agreement, the comment was a significant change of tone in Moscow, indicating the possibility of being willing to negotiate constructively on one of the most important demands of Kyiv.<\/p>\n

Ukraine has been a leader in negotiating that of the push toward security guarantees. Kyiv has been relentlessly demanding Washington<\/a> and other European<\/a> allies to make a binding promise on Kyiv in such a way that any future ceasefire or peace agreement would prevent a second wave of aggression. Ukrainian officials have made it clear that unless there are any convincing guarantees, any arrangement would be temporary.<\/p>\n

Donald Trump<\/a> has been a fervent supporter of the diplomatic push to achieve a compromise between Moscow and Kyiv and put an end to what has been the biggest war in Europe since the conclusion of the Second World War<\/a>. Nonetheless, Zelenskyy<\/a> has been complaining that Ukraine is under increasing pressure to compromise to speed up the peace process.<\/p>\n

Although no breakthrough was achieved in Geneva, both parties said that the negotiations were substantive. Washington described the talks as demonstrating a meaningful progress, although the Ukrainian and Russian negotiators said that the problems involved were quite complicated. Also according to Budanov, at least to this point, Moscow has not accepted a proposed summit between Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin,<\/a> a prospect previously mentioned by US special envoy Steve Witkoff<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, the seemingly open attitude of Russia towards US supported security guarantees may be seen as a step in the right direction. By indicating that it is willing to give way on one of the fundamental Ukrainian demands, Moscow could be attempting to show that it is willing to negotiate in an environment where long-term stability is taken into consideration. This strategy, being a long-term one, would reduce the tensions and would provide a margin of gradual compromises.<\/p>\n

Considering that the conflict is prolonged, Ukraine is under a significant economic, infrastructure, and population pressure, a well-thought-out agreement supported by a plausible international guarantee could be the only way to achieve stability. Although there is no denying that any settlement will be fraught with hard decisions to be made, positive interaction among all concerned may assist in turning weak hope into long-term peace.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
