The United Nations Security Council will convene a formal emergency meeting on Monday after a formal request by Ukraine was tabled by the Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha. The meeting occurs against the backdrop of increased tensions following a sequence of the recent attacks by Russia on Ukraine land. Sybiha writes that these strikes involved the deployment of an intermediate-range ballistic missile, which made Kyiv request the immediate international community via the highest security organ of the UN. Sybiha, wrote in a statement on Saturday posted on X that Ukraine had addressed the security council following recent attacks by Russia on Ukraine. He pointed out that the application of this kind of weaponry was a grave development that needed to be discussed urgently by the members of the Council. The emergency meeting will be arranged at 8 pm GMT. Sybiha said that he intended the meeting to deal with what he termed as the flagrant violations of the UN Charter by Moscow. He encouraged the members of the Security Council to be united and to speak up in order to end Russian aggression. He requested the international community to put in more effort to defend civilians caught in the conflict and to continue providing Ukraine with its sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Ukrainian foreign minister went on to say that the recent Russian moves were a bigger threat than Ukraine. Russian aggression, he said, was weakening the efforts of the United States, European nations, and other allies to maintain peace and security in the world. Sybiha says that this development necessitated the global community to act decisively and in unity. Controversy on the alleged attack and launching of missiles.
Russia’s statement over the missile attack
Russia also provided its explanation of the strikes along with the appeal of Ukraine to the UN. The Moscow government had already stated that it was in retaliation against Ukrainian attack on the residence of President Vladimir Putin in Novgorod on December 29, 2025. This alleged incident, according to the Russian officials, made them strike on targets in Ukraine. Sybiha strongly dismissed the claim by Russia, that no such attack on the residence of Putin occurred. He repeated that Ukraine had requested an emergency meeting of the Security Council, as Russia had fired an Oreshnik-type missile on Ukraine. Requesting the international community to take action, Sybiha pressed to apply more force on what he described as the aggressor, responsibility of atrocities committed, and measures towards restoring a sustainable peace.
