Secretary of the Russian Security Council Sergei Shoigu reiterated that Moscow supported the Chinese stand on Taiwan in a meeting with the foreign minister of China Wang Yi.

The meeting occurred in the context of the ever-growing friendship relations between Russia and China, which over recent years have become more politically, diplomatic, and security-related. The strategic partnership between the two nations officially became one of no limits shortly prior to the start of a military operation of Russia in Ukraine in February 2022 which indicates a high degree of congruence on major international and regional challenges.

In the talks, Shoigu highlighted the historic and unchanging position of Russia on Taiwan. According to him, Moscow is still strongly protested to any sort of Taiwanese autonomy and believes that the island is an indivisible section of the Chinese. Shoigu as stating that Russia was still witnessing efforts by foreign powers to disrupt the situation in the Taiwan Strait and reaffirmed Moscow in its totally undiminishing support of Beijing on the matter.

Shoigu also emphasized that the government of the People Republic of China is the only legitimate government representing the entire China to Russia. This stance is in line with the numerous delineations by Russia that have been against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Taiwan concerning the Taiwanese independence.

China considers Taiwan, whose government is democratically elected as one of their territory and has not ruled out the application of force to bring the island under its territories. Beijing has suggested that Taiwan adopt a one country, two systems type of the structure that was implemented in Hong Kong but none of the political parties in Taiwan is backing the proposal.

Russian Security Council affirmed that the visit would see Shoigu and Wang Yi deliberating over various issues that touch on the aspect of security. The former defence minister of Russia Shoigu was visiting China earlier on Sunday. His visit is a follow up to the earlier visit between the two officials in Moscow in December as a measure of high level contacts between the two countries which is quite regular and continuous.

The discussions are timed, when there are international diplomatic negotiations between Russia and Ukraine as well as between Russia and the United States, which aim to find a way out of the Ukrainian conflict that is almost four years old. Irrespective of these similar trends, Russia and China have been working closely in terms of their strategic and security issues, a factor that further strengthens their relationship in a changing world order.
