Norms for the quality of telecom services may be tightened: Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw

It cannot be a one-sided initiative, said Ashwini Vaishnaw.

According to reports, Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw assured the sector more reforms while urging it to play its role and dramatically raise service standards. The minister urged telecom companies and infrastructure suppliers to move more quickly on efforts to raise the quality of services offered in the nation. Vaishnaw elaborated, stating that the initiatives must be reciprocal and cannot be one-sided. The Minister also said that India’s 5G journey will be thrilling.

In a recent report by PTI, Telecom Minister Vaishnaw reportedly promised additional reforms in the telecom industry. Additionally, he said that the telecom sector must do its part to considerably raise the calibre of the services it offers.

The minister urged telecom companies and infrastructure suppliers to advance “full steam ahead” in raising the calibre of services offered in India. He also emphasised the need for reciprocity and the fact that projects cannot be unilateral.

Vaishnaw further added that the rollout of 5G in India will be exciting, saying that the government has set an objective of achieving 80 percent coverage in a reasonably short period of time.

“While many countries took multiple years to reach 40-50 percent coverage, we are targeting a very aggressive timeline. We should definitely cover at least 80 percent in a very short time frame,” Vaishnaw said.
