Airtel moves apex court over “arithmetical error” made by DoT
Telecom giant Bharti Airtel has moved the Supreme Court over “arithmetical error” committed by Department of Telecommunication (DoT) in calculating adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues.
It is expected that Vodafone Idea may follow the suit as they are facing the same trouble, that is, miscalculation of AGR dues by Department of Telecommunications. Vodafone Idea Ltd can either join the Airtel’s plea or approach the apex court separately.
According to DoT’s calculation Airtel owes nearly Rs 43,980 crore in AGR dues including principal, interest, penalty and interest on penalty, however according to the telecom it owes around Rs 13,000 crore. When it comes to Vodafone Idea, the company owes over Rs 58000 crore (according to DoT’s calculation) whereas according to the company’s calculation it owes Rs 50400 crore in AGR dues.
The operators must pay their dues by March 31, 2031, in 10 equal instalments beginning from April 1, 2021, with 10% payment of their AGR dues by March 31, 2021.
The date of court hearing has not been decided as yet.
