Xiaomi 16 tipped to feature periscope telephoto camera lens, enhancing zoom capabilities

The Xiaomi 16 is anticipated to debut in March 2025 in India, following its initial launch in China in October 2024. It will feature the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC, a 6.36-inch OLED display on the standard model, and a 6.73-inch 2K display on the Pro model.

Xiaomi is reportedly gearing up for the launch of its next-gen smartphone, the Xiaomi 16, which is expected to include an improved periscope telephoto camera lens. This comes as a notable enhancement to the device’s camera setup, which could allow users to capture far-off subjects without a loss in quality, thanks to the periscope design.

The Xiaomi 15 duo, launched earlier this year, boasted a Leica-tuned triple rear camera setup, led by a 50-megapixel primary sensor. While the standard Xiaomi 15 and Xiaomi 15 Pro had similar camera specifications, only the Pro model featured the periscope telephoto lens, offering 10x lossless zoom.

According to tipster Smart Pikachu on Weibo, the upcoming Xiaomi 16 is set to include the periscope telephoto camera across the entire lineup, increasing versatility for users. The 15 Pro, for reference, has a main 50-megapixel Light Hunter 900 sensor, paired with a 50-megapixel 5x periscope telephoto camera, and a 50-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera. The standard Xiaomi 15, on the other hand, has a 50-megapixel Light Fusion 900 sensor paired with a 50-megapixel telephoto and ultra-wide camera setup.

Both phones will support 90W wired fast charging and 50W wireless charging, with battery capacities of 5,400mAh and 6,100mAh, respectively.

With this upgrade, Xiaomi aims to continue strengthening its position in the smartphone market with a focus on cutting-edge camera technology, making it an exciting proposition for photography enthusiasts.
