India bans popular file-sharing service ‘WeTransfer’

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has banned the popular web-based file-sharing site WeTransfer.com, according to the Mumbai Mirror’s report.

The service was prohibited by the government citing public interest and national security concerns.

On 18 May, as per the news report, the telecom department issued a notice to internet service providers to ban two specific URLs (links) on WeTransfer and a third notice banning the entire site.

It is still unclear what data contained in the two links that were to be banned.

The development comes at a time when several corporate firms have allowed employees to work from home during the nationwide lockdown to curb the spread of Coronavirus.

It is worth noting that the Netherlands-based file sharing service has over 50 million users worldwide.

It facilitates users to share files up to 2 GB in size with anyone else. However, a premium paid plan offers special features and larger file capacities as well.
