The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing an email sent to staff members at parent firm Google, that YouTube is internally developing a tool for playing online games.
The corporation reportedly urged staff members to begin testing the brand-new YouTube feature known as “Playables,” and among the titles available for testing was the arcade game Stack Bounce. The report also mentioned that web browsers may be used to access the games on YouTube’s website by users of mobile devices running the Google Android and Apple iOS operating systems.
According to a YouTube spokesperson, gaming has always been a priority for the firm, but they also claimed that they were currently testing out new features and had “nothing to announce right now.”
The WSJ story stated that CEO Neal Mohan is pushing into new areas of development amid a downturn in advertising expenditure by hosting online games on YouTube, a popular platform for consumers to broadcast games and watch livestreamed game video.
There are a number of games that staff members may try out, according to the article. But it has been made clear that Stack Bounce is one of the games being provided and is an ad-supported arcade game. The object of the game is to use a bouncing ball to crush layers of bricks.
For YouTube, the online gaming market will open up yet another revenue stream. A number of new features have also been added by the corporation, one of which being the planned June 30 debut of YouTube’s first official retail channel for live commerce in South Korea, according to the Yonhap news agency.
