Fernanda Aguirre, a Chilean taekwondo player, and Candy Jacobs, a Dutch skateboarder, will not be able to compete in the 20220 Tokyo Olympics after testing positive for COVID-19 only a few days before the opening ceremony amid concerns about rising cases.<\/p>\n
On arrival in Tokyo, Aguirre tested positive, while Jacobs was found to be infected at the Games village, making her the sixth resident of the facility to be detected with the coronavirus.<\/p>\n
\u201cFernanda Aguirre has tested positive for Covid-19 in the tests carried out on her arrival in Japan,\u201d Chile\u2019s National Olympic Committee said in a statement.<\/p>\n
Jacobs posted a message on her Instagram page to announce that her Olympic campaign was now over.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am heartbroken. Unfortunately I tested positive for COVID-19 this morning, which means my Olympic journey ends here\u2026have done everything in my power to prevent this scenario and took all the precautions,\u201d she posted.<\/p>\n
In Uzbekistan, Aguirre had a negative COVID-19 report, however, she tested positive in the antigen test and the PCR test conducted at the Tokyo airport, after which she was quarantined at a designated facility. The Taekwondo competition begins on Saturday.<\/p>\n
